Fredrick spent his time in the army as a staff officer’s driver. He caught a stray bullet creasing his face causing a scar. After the war Fredrick started looking into way’s to contact the dead he realized that he could make some money and ease some of his fellow veterans sorrows to let them get on with living instead of dwelling on the wars happenings. He became known to others in society for his ability which threw him into contact with the wife of Professor Julius Arthur Smith. Professor Smith wife continued to use Fredrick to contact her dead loved ones.
